Governing Board of Directors

The Leadership Learning Academy (LLA) Board of Directors is a non-profit governing body made up of caring and experienced parents and community members established to oversee the implementation of the school charter as approved by the Utah State Office of Education.

Chuma UzohChair

June 2020.  Chuma Uzoh was raised in the Ogden area and graduated from Fremont High School.  He attended Weber State University and the University of Utah to earn a B.S. in Physics.  Chuma has worked at Hill Air Force Base for six years in various positions and is currently Program Manager over the eTool Tech Data Transformation project.  Chuma’s hobbies include learning, entrepreneurial business opportunities, participation in non-profit organizations, and traveling.  Chuma’s passion for helping others has been his drive for bringing Leadership Learning Academy into fruition.  In college, Chuma worked in the Upward Bound Program for first generation college-bound high school kids and the Davis School District After School Program to provide tutoring and after school activities for elementary age children.  He believes that a good education builds a strong nation, and that investment must be heavily made in children’s education today so that they will be well prepared to participate in the global economy of the future.  His vision for Leadership Learning Academy is to create an environment where teachers have the tools and resources to provide the best education possible and all students can reach their full potential.

June 2018.  Terry Capener grew up in Davis County, and graduated from Clearfield High School.  He received both his B.S. and B.A. from Utah State University.  He obtained his MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Terry is currently the General Manager and Vice President at Lagoon Amusement Park where he has worked for the past thirty-six years.  He is thankful that he “gets” to go to work every day, rather than “has” to go to work!

He has many outside interests and currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Utah Restaurant Association, he is the past Chair of the Davis County Tax Advisory Board, and he works with edcUTAH.  His passions are his family, traveling, and cooking (ok…let’s be totally honest…he has a passion for eating).  Terry Capener is very excited to serve on the Leadership Learning Academy Board and hopefully can add a unique perspective.

Jimmy SunlightFinancial Coordinator

June 2021. Jimmy Sunlight was raised in the Davis County area and graduated from Clearfield High School.  Shortly after high school, he attended Weber State University and earned a B.S. in Business Administration.  In 2014, he decided to continue his education and received his MBA from the University of Phoenix.  Jimmy is currently the Director of Operations at Lagoon Amusement Park.  Jimmy believes that the value of getting a good education at an early age contributes to good study habits and educational success in the future.  When he’s not riding Roller Coasters at Lagoon, his hobbies includes playing fantasy sports, going to the movies with his girls, and watching HGTV.  Jimmy is very proud and honored to be serving on LLA’s governing board.

June 2021.  David Gray grew up in Kaysville, Utah and currently resides in Syracuse with his wife, Sasha, and their three children.  David has an MBA degree from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor’s Degree in Health Care Administration from Weber State University. In addition, David obtained his certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources. Currently, David is the Human Resources Manager at Lagoon Amusement Park, where he oversees a seasonal staff of over 3,000 team members and a full-time year-round staff of 175. Aside from loving to go to work every day, David has a love for travel, his family and discovering a delicious treat to share with friends. David has a strong passion for education and is thrilled to be part of the Leadership Learning Academy.

Deborah HansenBoard Member

June 2019.  Deb Hansen has a BA in Mathematics Education from Brigham Young University, Master of Science in Food Science and Nutrition from Framingham State College, and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Utah. She also has an Administrative Endorsement from Utah State University. Deb was born and raised in a small town outside Boston, Massachusetts. She taught Math, Chemistry and Science for 11 years and then worked as a Child Nutrition Program Senior Specialist at the Utah State Office of Education for 4 years. She also worked as the Director of Child Nutrition, Public Relations, Procurement and Transportation for the Ogden City School District.  Since retiring, Deb has crossed into the charter school world.  She just retired as the Director of Business Operations for Northern Utah Academy for Math, Engineering and Science (NUAMES) where she served for 11 years.  Deb loves the charter school environment and the opportunity that we provide for families to have a choice in their children’s education!

Board Meetings

All Leadership Learning Academy Board of Directors Meetings are open to the public.  Meetings and agendas are posted at least twenty-four (24) hours in advance and include the time and location.  LLA follows the Utah Open Meetings Act. If you are interested in receiving an automatic e-mail or RSS feed whenever the LLA Board of Directors will be having a public meeting, you may visit the Utah Public Meeting Notice website and search for Leadership Learning Academy.

Financial Oversight

The Governing Board oversees the financial health of Leadership Learning Academy. All budgets are approved by the Governing Board and published on the Utah Public Finance Website.
